Heroes walk among us is a common statement. It could be a small first grader, a school nurse or a high school class, but they were in the right place at the right time to help someone in a very dramatic way. U-46 certainly knows this to be true.
A student in a first/second grade multiage classroom at Liberty Elementary is a hero to his family, friends and everyone at Liberty. Joshua, a first grader, went home where he and his mom live with his grandparents. It was after school and Josh and his grandfather were at home. He was getting a snack out of the refrigerator and heard his grandfather cry out. He had a seizure and hit his head on the counter. He was collapsed on the floor and bleeding. Joshua called 911 and help arrived to take care of his grandfather.
At Laurel Hill Elementary School, Carol Haug, DSN, stepped in to save the life of a staff member who had a complete airway obstruction. Laurel Hill Elementary Principal, Patricia Stubbs and the entire Laurel Hill staff, presented her with a bouquet of red roses and words of appreciation. John Heiderscheidt, Coordinator for District Safety and Security, presented her with a certificate of appreciation for exemplary service.
Students in Mrs. Toni Johnson’s class at Gifford Street High School took a class discussion to the next level - they became involved. They proposed a variety of ideas to raise money for breast cancer research and created a PowerPoint presentation to show to the principal, Mr. Morris Mallory and dean of students, Mr. Jerry Cook, for approval of their activities.
They promoted a number of activities to raise money to help those in need of a cure. The students not only raised money, they raised awareness by designing posters, passing out pink ribbons and making weekly announcements to share breast cancer statistics. The money collected from peers and faculty was donated to Susan G. Komen for the Cure®.
The students involved in these fundraising endeavors were: Rosa Aguilar, Ciera Brumlow, Amanda Garcia, Codi Lippincott, Itzel Nunez, Guadalupe Ramirez, Laura Valdespino. The students were led by the instructor, Mrs. Toni Johnson.
During this season we are thankful for all of the heroes among us in classrooms, offices, buses and kitchens across the district.
